Let’s talk about SUMMER READING…
A few summers ago, Haynes ELA Department made the choice to not have “ASSIGNED” summer reading. This decision was made – not because we think kids do not need to read over the summer – but quite the opposite… Kids absolutely NEED to READ during the summer! However, the best way to get them to read is to let them read something they want to read! Most of the teachers look forward to summer to have time to catch up on books – and we want our students to have that same joy.
What can you do as parents??? Encourage them to read! Bring them to the library or Barnes and Noble – and get some books that they are excited about! THEN – talk to them about what they are reading – or read it for yourself and discuss it.
The answer to the question “Do you have summer reading?” is YES – but the good part is it is anything that you want to read.
Without a doubt – readers have the strongest vocabulary. This helps tremendously as students move through high school classes and the reading levels of materials gets increasingly more difficult. PLUS – SAT and ACT Reading scores are higher for readers!
The Louisiana Library Association hosts a Reader’s Choice Award each year for both middle school and teen readers. We have put together a website with all of the nominated books for 2019-2020 – and this would be a good place to start. Also, if your kid has no ideas of what to read – reach out to the ELA teachers – if we know a few books that they like, we can usually make recommendations. Graphic Novels are huge – especially with middle schoolers – so don’t rule them out!
Finally – the library is FREE – as long as you live in Jefferson Parish! Plus, with a library card – you can get ebooks and audio books to download for free as well! Audio books are great supplements to print books – especially for reluctant readers!
