2ND SEMESTER – THIRD NINE WEEKS Syllabus:
Third nine weeks is a combination of LEAP preparation and Louisiana State Curriculum.
We will be reading Romeo and Juliet and the additional non-fiction related articles.
We will continue Accelerated Reading assignments, AR tests, and we will add book reports.
We will continue the lessons in the Vocabulary for the College bound Unit A book.
We will continue daily edits from Romeo and Juliet and we will master grammar phrases and clauses, simple, compound, and complex sentences. Additional grammar support assignments will be added to homework in the 3rd nine weeks.
LEAP TEST PREP:
I know everyone would like to make the highest scores possible on the LEAP so we will practice at every opportunity.
1)Everyone will be assigned a Performance Assessment Workbook for the 3rd nine weeks. This workbook is to remain in class for class work and Writing Test Assessments.
2)When the online practice tests are made available by the state, then we will practice online.
Until then we will practice typing all writing assignments in class in a timed setting in the computer lab.
3)We will also be practicing reading comprehension and reading speed with the Timed Reading Literature exercises and graphing student progress.

Complete the reading of Romeo and Juliet in Class this week.
Journals (summaries of each act) will be due Next Tuesday – Mar 21.

HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH ASSESSMENT FEES : $20.00 make checks to Haynes Academy
This fee includes the vocabulary books, the novel Fahrenheit 451 and the printed anthology.
Vocabulary – There will be three vocabulary quizzes each nine weeks.
Each quiz will cover three units. Students must complete the workbook exercises and make flashcards. All tests will include one reading comprehension question from the workbook exercises.
Accelerated Reading for English I – students will be required to complete one fiction and one non-fiction AR test each nine weeks. In addition to tests – students will accumulate points for each test taken.
8th grade students must meet a goal of 85 points for the entire year. Final grades in AR will be based on total points achieved.
Tutoring and Make-ups – I am available on Tuesday – 2nd half of lunch in room 200 for make-up tests and tutoring – see me for a pass if you plan to attend.
Homework – After our first visit to the library, students always have a library book to read every night. Students must take notes on all Accelerated reading assignments. Vocabulary homework exercises and notecards are assigned weekly. Homework is announced in class daily, homework is written on the board, and on this WIKI. Late assignments lose 10 points each day late. Students who are at competition or out sick should make arrangements for make-ups.
Extra Credit – students may earn extra credit for participation grades.
Students can show me grammatical errors in printed text, or if they see a vocabulary word used in text and point it out to me – I will give them an “A” averaged into participation grades. Students may earn up to three extra credits a nine weeks.
Supply List – black pens, red pens, yellow highlighters, index cards, loose leaf paper, one tab in a binder for Handouts/Classwork, or use a pocket folder for handouts, then one additional pocket folder to stay in the classroom.
Curriculum – English I follows the Louisiana State Comprehensive curriculum. Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies also supplements with a novel each nine weeks: Fahrenheit 451 – novel for first quarter, Animal Farm, second quarter, To Kill A Mockingbird, third quarter. Jefferson Parish School System also includes standardized test preparation in the form of interval testing each nine weeks.

LAST WEEK – HOMEWORK AND CLASSWORK
SUMMARY OF Week of SEPTEMBER 16 –
Tuesday – Part II Fahrenheit 451 test. groupwork on part III. Find
allusions, show not tell, and figurative language.
Determine purpose of all three literary devices.
Library Day Friday – 9/16 – bring list of 5 fiction AR books
Take the non-fiction AR test with form and notes completed
Make-up tests on Monday – 1st half of lunch for AR and Fahrenheit 451 Part II.
Continue to read Fahrenheit 451 Part III – Essay test will be Thursday 9/22. All essays will be completed in class – using your books and notes.
