Megan Marsalone is the 2017-2018 Louisiana Association of Student Councils State President. Megan and Haynes Academy were voted in by student councils around the state through parliamentary procedures. Alex Edwards was also voted by the New Orleans district as the 2017-2018 Vice President of GNOASC.
The LASC convention was held at Archbishop Hannan High School January 14-16 with the theme “Your Ticket to Leadership.
Once arriving at Hannan, all schools running for office set up a “Meet the Candidates” table where delegates from schools from around the state learned about the schools that were running for office. Later that day at the opening session the schools performed a prepared skit connected to their campaign theme that emphasized their leadership skills and their purpose for running for office. Haynes Academy’s theme was “Cooking Up Leadership” and the skit was entitled “Haynes Kitchen”
The next afternoon at the third general session each candidate had to make a speech to the delegates expressing why they are running and why the delegate schools should vote for them.
On Monday morning at the last general session all delegates gathered in the auditorium with the president from each school seated in the House of Delegates section. In alphabetical order each school was called upon by the Parliamentarian to vote for the school they chose for each office. In the end Haynes Academy won the election against a formidable opponent from South Terrebonne High School.
In all there were more than 1000 kids from around the state from high schools and junior high schools. The delegates from Haynes Academy were in campaign mode the entire weekend and along the way made many new friends. The Haynes Academy delegation included; Megan Marsalone, Alex Edwards, Brittany Rowell, Andrew Rodrigue, Emily Reine, Zac Ledet, Justin Hugger, Abigail Batten, Diensn Xing, Tia Williams, Gabby Westerfield, and Sage Mitchell.
